A Florida Man Was Convicted Of Fraud Involving the Affordable Care Act
Some people are willing to do anything for a buck.
A Florida man is facing jail time after being convicted of submitting fraudulent health insurance application claims. According to reports the man, Keaton L. Copeland, owned and controlled Express ACA.
It’s a health insurance company based in Miami. Copeland filed the bogus applications to cash in on more than $500,000 in federal subsidies meant for low-income people.
Express ACA employees submitted thousands of health insurance applications in 2014 and 2015 on behalf of individuals. Many of the applicants did not need health insurance and had no knowledge that the applications had been filed.
The fraud was detected by Blue Cross of Louisiana and they prevented further attempts by Copeland to defraud other insurance firms.
Copeland was found guilty on 5 counts of wire fraud and one count of wire fraud conspiracy. He is facing up to 20 years in prison.
