Suspected Shoplifter Lauro Mesa Arrested After Fleeing Scene, Leading Police On Wild Chase
It was a scene that seemed like it came right out of an episode of the World’s Wildest Police Videos.
According to reports, police in Madison Bay were called to a beauty store regarding suspected shoplifters. Police arrived on scene and were talking to management of the store.
A man walked outside and the manager identified him as one of the alleged shoplifters. Officers identified themselves and the man took off on foot towards the parking lot.
One of the officers attempted to arrest the man, Lauro Mesa, as he jumped into his vehicle but he continued to flee and dragged the officer a short distance.
The vehicle fled to I55 and a pursuit ensued. It was over quicker than anticipated when the driver attempted to exit the highway but lost control and crashed into trees. The man and a woman inside the vehicle fled on foot.
A helicopter and K9 units were deployed and Mesa was arrested and taken into custody. While searching the vehicle, police found a number of items they believe were stolen from other jurisdictions.
The officer that was injured attempting to apprehend Mesa Lauro did not suffer life threatening injuries. He was treated at a local hospital and released.
Mesa is charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, felony fleeing, shoplifting and simple cruelty to a dog.
The female accomplice has been identified as Alvarez Frometa Yarelis. Police are actively searching for her and warrants are currently being issued for her capture.
